Photo 4: The Huon pine is a conifer, endemic to Tasmania, and is Australia's oldest living tree. Huon pine has been prized as a timber since the early 1800s. It is probably the most durable of all Australian timbers. The durability of the wood is due to the presence of the an oil called methyl eugenol, giving Huon pine a unique odor. The oil acts as a preservative and deters insects. Instrument makers enjoy Huon pine for its sound quality.
